Most students don’t want to continue in the same school after the SLC. It’s not necessarily the quality of education that is the main concern, but most students want a change in their studying environment. They want a new environment with other benefits.
Here’s some help with the selection process:
1. The college has to have a good reputation.
2. Peers play a very important role. We don’t always want to separate from our friends, and sometimes, we pick a college where the gang of friends can be together. Naturally, some comprises have to be made.
3. It goes without saying that children often have to go to the college chosen/approved by their parents. Parents often pressure their kids to take up something practical, relevant, or business-oriented; parents tend to impose their own ideas on kids.
A similar incident happened to my friend. She was excellent in Accounting and wanted to take up Commerce. Unfortunately, her parents firmly decided that her future was with Science. She did as she was told. Since science was never an easy subject for her, she is suffering immensely. Finally, her parents realized it and have suggested for her to continue her 11 again and to study commerce. What a loss! That isn’t just a waste of one year; it is a waste of energy, resources, time and money.
4. Since there are myriad of colleges in the town, choosing one is not an easy task. Advertisements help a lot. I remember receiving bulks of pamphlets from various colleges on the way from giving our SLCs.
5. Lastly, of course, the fee has to be reasonable with maximum facilities.
How it should be done:
To find the best college for yourself, you have to begin with YOU. You will be the person studying there, not your parents, nor your best friend. Discuss, ask for advice, but the final decision has to be yours, and it has to be one that you are happy with.
As you begin your +2 college search consider the following:
Ø Type: Do you want an all girls/boys college or a co-educational one? Different people feel comfortable in different environments, so ask yourself, where would you be able to open up socially?
Ø Size: Do you want a big college with many students or would you prefer to study in a small college? Maybe you are used to small classes but now want a change; maybe you feel intimidated around too many people. You know best.
Ø Location: Do you want to be a boarder or a day scholar? Do you want to study in your own city or go to some other part of the country? If a day scholar, how much time do you want to spend on transportation? For instance, there may be number of good colleges just outside core area. Some students enjoy the refreshing ride there, some find it tiring. It’s up to you to decide what you want. Just a word of advice: if location is the only thing that’s preventing you from attending your dream college, you’ll need to compromise a little.
Ø Academic programs: Which academic stream do you plan to pursue? A college might be weak in other aspects but have a strong academic program in the field that you are interested in. before you apply, be sure to check out the programs being offered.
Ø Facilities: What extra-curricular programs are you interested in? Does the college offer what you want? For instance, if you are interested in basketball, looking for a college that has a strong basketball team might be a good idea. Love reading books? Check the college library before making the final decision.
Ø Cost: Can your family afford the college of your choice? If not, does the college offer any scholarships schemes for talented students? A lot of colleges now have scholarships for students with good SLC marks. See if the college you want to attend offers any financial aid.
Ø Reputation: Although the college’s reputation shouldn’t be the sole factor on which you base your decision, but graduating from a reputable college will help you in the future. Also, a college doesn’t earn its reputation for nothing. Go to the college, talk to the students and the faculty and see for yourself if the college lives up to the reputation.
